Eagles Fans Saved By Sportsbook That Paid To Restore Train Service Cut Due To Budget Crisis

It looked like thousands of Eagles fans would be dealing with a headache in the wake of the NFL’s season opener in Philadelphia due to the budget crisis that forced SEPTA to cut the number of trains leaving the stadium on Thursday night. However, a sportsbook has swooped in to save the day by forking over a sizeable amount of cash to get service back up and running.

Lincoln Financial Field is one of the many professional sports stadiums situated in a fairly remote part of the city that the team that plays its games there calls home. The venue where the Philadelphia Eagles play is located about as far south in The City of Brotherly Love as you can get, and you’d need to walk more than an hour from The Linc to get to any tourist attractions of note.

The stadium is around a 15-minute car ride from Center City, and while plenty of fans opt for that method of transportation, around 15,000 of them will harness public transportation in the form of the trains that the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) usually runs to and from the stadium on gameday.

However, SEPTA found itself facing a budgetary crisis over the summer, and last month, its general manager warned Eagles fans they’d be facing a lengthy wait to catch a train after the team’s season opener against the Cowboys on September 4th, saying the agency was forced to cut the supplemental service it usually offers in an attempt to tighten its belt.

Thankfully, a savior has stepped in just in time.

FanDuel is paying to restore the SEPTA service so Eagles fans will have an easier time getting to and from their showdown with the Cowboys

As of Tuesday, SEPTA was warning fans who were planning to watch the Eagles take on the Cowboys in person on Thursday night to be prepared to deal with logistical issues stemming from the budget cuts.

The organization noted it was on the hunt for sponsors who might be willing to foot the bill for the “Sports Express” trains that were canceled, and according to NBC10, it found one after FanDuel emerged at the 11th hour to make sure that particular service is restored.

The outlet reports the sportsbook agreed to fork over $40,000, with half of that sum going to cover the base operation for the 10 express trains that will be running and the remainder being used to cover the tab for riders who will be able to take advantage of a free ride on the way back from the game.

You do have to give credit where credit is due to FanDuel for this move, and it’s hard to fault them for taking advantage of the opportunity that presented itself.
