The Philadelphia Eagles are acquiring another backup quarterback.
They traded for Sam Howell, sending a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection to get the veteran backup and a 2026 sixth-round selection.
This comes in the wake of Tanner McKee‘s finger injury.
Nevertheless, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that this could also be the Eagles gearing up for another move.
As much as they love McKee, they’ve reportedly gotten plenty of trade interest in him.
“This isn’t an immediate precursor to Philly trading Tanner McKee. The Eagles LOVE McKee. However, there’s been interest in the 25-year-old, and having Howell aboard gives the team flexibility if, for some reason, a big offer comes,” Breer posted on X.

The Eagles traded Kenny Pickett to the Cleveland Browns to start the offseason, elevating McKee to the primary backup spot.
They also have Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Kyle McCord.
For the time being, however, it will be Howell who’ll serve as Jalen Hurts’ primary backup.
Howell excelled at North Carolina, but he hasn’t been able to establish himself in the league.
He’s made 20 appearances in his three years in the league, including 17 starts with the Washington Commanders back in 2023.
That year, he passed for 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions while completing nearly 64% of his passes.
He spent the prior campaign with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Minnesota Vikings during this year’s NFL Draft.
Of course, the job will always be Jalen Hurts’ to lose, but we’ve seen how not being prepared with a solid backup quarterback can derail any team’s season, so the defending Super Bowl champions need to take all precautions with their roster.
Still, with so many options, chances are that at least one of their current quarterbacks won’t be on the team after Tuesday’s deadline.
