It’s been a couple of busy days for the Philadelphia Eagles. Jaire Alexander‘s shocking decision to step away from the game has left the team scrambling for a replacement.

Fortunately for them, they already had someone there to step up. Per their own announcement, the team just placed Alexander on the Reserve/Retired list, all while activating CB Jakorian Bennett from the reserve.

Bennett had been out with a pectoral injury. He was placed on Injured Reserve (IR) after the team’s Week 3 win. They opened his 21-day practice window to return in the third week of October, so this move was somewhat expected.

Even so, there are no guarantees about his role with the team. While CB Adoree’ Jackson has struggled mightily even when healthy, he might not be able to suit up next week because of an injury.

Backup CB Kelee Ringo has been even shakier at the position, so Bennett might even be ahead of him in the pecking order. Whatever the case, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio should have some options.

As for Alexander, his sudden decision to take a step back from football just days after being traded to the Eagles and before he could even play for them was a bit of a blow. While he’s clearly not the same All-Pro-caliber star he was during his days with the Green Bay Packers, the Eagles clearly thought he still had something left in the tank.

Of course, there’s still a chance that he may come back. In the meantime, the team will just have to get by with what they have.
