The New York Giants announced that they were officially benching quarterback Daniel Jones this week, likely bringing an end to the QB’s tenure as the franchise’s starting signal-caller, which began back in 2019 when Big Blue drafted him 6th overall out of Duke University.

Drew Lock tried to preface his answer with some self-reflection and partially blame his failure to be promoted to starting QB on himself, but he couldn’t help but imply that the Giants told him he’d be QB2 when he signed for them in March.

Not only was Daniel Jones benched, but he was demoted to QB4: Tommy DeVito will be the starter, Lock will the backup, and practice squad player Tim Boyle will reportedly be the team’s emergency QB.

“Again, that’s a question I might still have for myself,” Lock said of not being named the new starter, losing out to Tommy DeVito. “It was expressed to me that I was going to be the two [quarterback]. I don’t know, it’s an interesting situation.”

Lock quickly made sure to return to a politically appeasing answer, saying that he’s supportive of both Jones and DeVito, and that he wants to be known as a good teammate.

“Not much I can really say about it besides I’m going to be here for him [Jones], and we’re still very good friends, believe it or not. I’m going to be here for him, this team needs to get a win. We start winning, everything gets a little better around here,” Lock said.

“I want more jobs after this year. If I come in and be ugly and nasty, it leaves a bad taste in these guys’ mouths. I’m going to come in and be great. Not to mention…Tommy is a great friend. He deserve to have this team behind him, I’m excited for him.”

While Lock might have the right to feel aggrieved about perceived promises being broken, the fact is that there’s been a lot of time — and, most importantly, practice time — since March, and perhaps what the Giants have seen since them makes them more confident in Tommy DeVito than Lock as their desperation option.
