Drake Maye will look to quickly turn the page after the New England Patriots dropped a gutting Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
New England missed an opportunity to clinch the AFC East when squandering a 21-0 lead Sunday at home. The second-year quarterback delivered a mature message about how he plans to respond to the setback in his post-game press conference.
“Don’t let it beat you twice,” Maye said. “Move on to the next week and learn from it. Take what we can, and know that we got some football ahead of us that is still very important. Don’t just hang our hat. Keep your head up, and know that we had a chance and were there, and they made more plays. Credit to them.”
Sunday had the makings of a momentous occasion for the Patriots, who controlled the ground game with 246 rushing yards. Maye helped that cause by running 50 yards downfield to block for TreVeyon Henderson on the rookie’s 65-yard touchdown that put New England back ahead early in the fourth quarter.
However, star running back James Cook gave Buffalo a go-ahead touchdown later in the final period. The Bills ended all four of their second-half possessions inside the end zone.
With New England’s running attack taking control, Maye finished the Week 15 showcase with a season-low 155 passing yards. The second-year star scored two rushing touchdowns but went without a passing touchdown for the first time since a Week 5 win at Buffalo.
Maye also averaged his fewest yards per pass attempt (6.7) since Week 1with his lowest quarterback rating (62.8) of the season. Yet the Patriots still had a golden opportunity to leave Foxborough with the division title.
New England can follow Maye’s sage wisdom by rebounding against the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday night.
