Josh Allen is proving to be a generational talent, but Drake Maye wasn’t exactly watching in awe Sunday as the Buffalo Bills quarterback put together another masterpiece.

After trailing by as many as 21 in the first half and beginning the third quarter in a 17-point hole, Allen and the Bills’ offense chipped away at the New England Patriots’ lead en route to a massive, 35-31, comeback win. The Patriots would have claimed the AFC East crown with a win, so Buffalo managed to stave that off for at least another week.

Allen is having a remarkable season, carrying the Bills’ offense perhaps more so than he’s ever needed to with this year’s relative dearth of pass-catching weapons. He orchestrated one scoring drive after another Sunday, finishing 19-for-28 for 193 yards in the air with three touchdowns, adding 48 yards on the ground across 11 carries.

Maye was asked if he watches with any sort of appreciation for his counterpart’s otherworldly talent.

“I’m worried about our guys. I’m trying to go match it, and trying to go answer,” Maye said after the game, via a team-provided transcript. “We answered once, but failed to do it the next two times. So had a chance when defense got us the ball back, and that’s what you have to strive for. We made it happen last time but didn’t make it happen today.”

Maye, like the rest of the Patriots, played their best football in the first half. He ultimately finished 14-for-23 passing for 155 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Maye scored twice on the ground while logging 43 yards on four carries.
