Drake Maye Reveals How Mike Vrabel Keeps Him Grounded Amid MVP Buzz

Drake Maye is having one of the best seasons among any NFL quarterback. The quarterback impressed as a rookie, but he’s been much more consistent this season and has seemingly taken a step forward.

Maye’s stellar performance has led the Patriots to a 5-2 record, and the team is currently sitting in first place in the AFC East. Head coach Mike Vrabel has also made a huge difference in his first season with the team, and the Maye-Vrabel duo has fans excited for the future.

Recently, Maye was asked about his name being floated as an MVP candidate. The quarterback responded by explaining how Vrabel is keeping him grounded through all the hype.

“One of the best things that Coach Vrabel was saying … there’s stuff that’s interesting vs. important,” Maye said on “WEEI Afternoons.” “I think all that stuff is interesting and it’s cool to be in those graphics and whatever, but I think what’s important is to try to keep it going, keep on winning games.”

As Maye mentioned, he sees the MVP talk as “interesting” but not “important” to the team’s success. Vrabel notably used this same expression last week when he was being asked about returning to Nashville for the first time since being fired by the Titans.

Clearly, Vrabel is making a big impression on these players. The coach has seemingly already instilled a team-first mentality, and that’s hard to do with so many young and talented athletes.

So far, Maye has thrown for 1,744 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Only seven quarterbacks have more yards than Maye so far, and no starting quarterback has a better completion percentage. Maye has also made plays with his legs, rushing 200 yards and two scores so far.

Maye and the Patriots will take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 as they look to secure their fifth win in a row.
