Drake Maye continued his historic second season when leading the New England Patriots to a Week 13 win over the New York Giants.
The 23-year-old reinserted himself as the MVP favorite by completing 24 of 31 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns on Monday night. Maye notched a sterling 126.0 quarterback rating, moving narrowly ahead of Matthew Stafford with an NFL-best 111.9 passer rating in 2025.
Maye placed himself alongside an iconic quarterback in the process. NFL+ noted that he joined Dan Marino as the second quarterback since 1950 to lead his team to 10 straight wins with a quarterback rating of at least 80 in each victory at age 24 or younger.
Marino also achieved that feat during his second season. The Miami Dolphins legend finished the 1984 campaign with 5,084 passing yards and 48 passing touchdowns, both single-season records at the time.
He also became the youngest quarterback ever to win MVP, a record now held by Lamar Jackson (22 years old in 2019).
Maye could follow that path and join Tom Brady as the second Patriots player to garner MVP honors. The former North Carolina star has a compelling case with an NFL-high 3,412 passing yards and the second-most yards per pass attempt (8.8) behind Sam Darnold.
Although still seeking his first career outing with 300 passing yards, Maye has shown remarkable consistency by exceeding 200 yards and an 80 passer rating in all 13 games this season. He’s cleared a 100 rating 10 times and thrown a touchdown in every matchup besides a monumental Week 5 win over the Buffalo Bills.
Maye may be more focused on ending his second season with a Super Bowl appearance like Marino. The Patriots have a Week 14 bye before a rematch against Buffalo.
