The New England Patriots let a winnable game slip away to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday because they kept turning the ball over, and quarterback Drake Maye didn’t hesitate to blame the loss on the team’s mistakes.

“We hurt ourselves,” Maye said after losing to the Steelers.

New England outgained Pittsburgh in total yardage, 368 to 202, but the Steelers lost only one turnover, while the Patriots committed five.

The Patriots committed two of their five turnovers in the red zone. The first occurred at the end of the first half when Maye threw an interception on 3rd-and-goal. The second happened at the beginning of the second half when Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled on Pittsburgh’s 2-yard line.

The other three non-red zone turnovers were costly since the first turnover of the game set up a Steelers touchdown, while the other two turnovers happened in Pittsburgh’s territory.

New England squandered too many scoring opportunities, which ultimately cost them the game. The Patriots lost by just seven points, and if they had converted their chances in the red zone, they could have walked away with their first back-to-back wins since 2022.
