New England Patriots - NESN.com
The New England Patriots are on a historic winning streak, becoming the first team in NFL history to win 10 straight games in a single season with at least 23 points scored and no more than 23 points allowed in all of them.
While the Patriots are enjoying incredible team success, much of it stems from their young quarterback Drake Maye, who’s on a historic run himself.
Maye has been remarkably consistent during New England’s winning streak, finishing each game with at least 200 passing yards, positive rushing yards, at least eight yards per pass attempt, no more than one interception and the victory.
By comparison, no other quarterback in NFL history has had more than five straight starts like that, let alone 10.
That speaks to Maye’s tremendous poise and consistency, which are even more impressive for a 23-year-old quarterback in his second NFL season.
During the Patriots’ winning streak, Maye has averaged 262.7 passing yards per game and 23.2 rushing yards per game with a 71.1 percent completion rate, a 115.9 passer rating and an 18:4 TD/INT ratio. That stretch, combined with New England’s shocking success, is a big reason why he’s a legitimate MVP candidate this year.
Maye’s also been much better at avoiding pressure lately, taking just six sacks over his last four games combined after averaging nearly four sacks per game through his first nine.
Maye looks much more comfortable than he did last year. He’s on the same page with his receivers, and Josh McDaniels is putting him in a position to succeed every week.
It’s also helped that he hasn’t had to face too many difficult defenses or tough matchups in general, but his ability to maintain such a high level of play every week has been impressive.
After getting a bye week to rest up, Maye will look to continue his historic heater in a rematch with the Buffalo Bills in Week 15.
