The New England Patriots had multiple jaw-dropping plays on both sides of the ball during their 33-15 win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. From Marcus Jones’ 94-yard punt return touchdown to all of the bone-crushing hits on defense, there was no shortage of exciting moments at Gillette Stadium.
One came late in the second quarter with the Patriots up 17-7 and three and a half minutes remaining in the half. On third and eight from the Giants’ 33-yard line, Drake Maye dropped back and fired a perfect bomb to rookie receiver Kyle Williams in the front left corner of the end zone.
The ball sailed over a diving Paulson Adebo and fell into the hands of Williams, who made a splendid over-the-shoulder catch for the touchdown.
During his radio appearance on WEEI on Tuesday, Maye was asked if the throw was one of his best. Instead, he gave all the credit to Williams for making an incredible grab.
“I probably think it’s one of the best catches I’ve seen. I think the catch is better than the throw,” Maye said. “I probably made it tougher on him than it needed to be. He beat him off the line. I think the catch is better than the throw there.”
Maye is known for having one of the best deep balls in the league, so he might have been a bit modest.
Regardless of who deserves more credit, it was a spectacular play by both players. It was Williams’ second career touchdown and Maye’s second touchdown pass of the game, putting New England up by 17 points at the time.
After a slow start, Williams has begun to make a larger impact over the last month. Over his last four games, he has three catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns, establishing himself as a legitimate deep threat in the offense.
