Drake Maye will experience a lot of new in his second season with the Patriots, including the dynamic of the quarterback room.

As a rookie, Mayed worked alongside veteran Jacoby Brissett and fellow first-year signal-caller Joe Milton III. Brissett left the Patriots in NFL free agency, while Milton’s brief New England tenure ended when he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on April 3.

Almost one full month after the deal, Maye issued his first public comments on Milton becoming Dak Prescott’s new backup.

“Yeah, I texted Joe,” Maye told reporters Thursday, per a team-provided video. “Me and came in together, we learned the offense together. We were competing every day to see who could outthrow the other in practice. He’s got a big arm. For him to go and get a chance to be a backup — I think you saw in the Bills game his potential. He’s got a different play style, a little bit. It was fun relating to our similar college offenses. It was cool to be in the room and have somebody to bounce off ideas. So, cool for Joe and you never know, maybe we’ll play him again. I’ll see him down the road.”

Multiple reports indicated a main reason why the Patriots traded Milton was because the 2024 sixth-round pick fancied himself as a starter. Mike Vrabel simply wrote off the transaction as “best for the team,” but New England’s head coach did acknowledge Milton’s reps figured to decrease as the offseason progressed if he stuck around.

With Milton out of the picture, newcomer Joshua Dobbs is poised to be Maye’s understudy in the upcoming season.
