Doug Martin’s family issued has a statement through the former NFL running back’s agent revealing he struggled with mental illness prior to his unexpected death at the age of 36. The family also shared that they were actively trying to get him help on the day that he passed.
The statement from Athletes First and its CEO Brian Murphy expressed that he and his agency had represented Doug Martin since he was drafted out of Boise State University in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Martin would go on to have a solid seven-year career with the Buccaneers and Raiders, rushing for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns. He twice rushed for more than 1,400 yards in a single season, including his rookie year and earning Pro Bowl honors in both seasons.
“Privately, Doug battled mental health challenges that profoundly impacted his personal and professional life. Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run,” the statement continued.
“Following recent media reports about Doug’s untimely passing, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances. Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support,” the statement continued. “Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police. An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway.”
On Monday, the Oakland Police Department also issued a statement about the death of Doug Martin.
“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland. While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics responded to the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.
“Since Saturday, OPD has been in contact with Martin’s family. The family has requested privacy as they grieve this tragic loss. No additional details are being released at this time, as this remains an ongoing investigation.”
A previous statement by the Oakland Police Department about Martin’s death had been issued on Oct. 18, the day of his passing.
“The incident occurred just after 4:15 a.m. on October 18, 2025, in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street. Officers responded to the area for an individual who had broken into a nearby residence. Simultaneously, officers were notified of an individual who was experiencing a medical emergency and was believed to be the same individual related to the break-in.
“Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside the residence. While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, the individual became unresponsive. Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital.
