UNITY TWP, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers could bolster their wide receiver corps prior to the start of the regular season, but wide receiver Scotty Miller has made a case at training camp that he could be a reliable option for the club this season.
“I pride myself on, for one, just being able to do what I (am asked) to do,” Miller said. “Just the receiver position, just being able to play all the different spots, being able to play the slot, being able to go outside and beat bigger corners one on one, and then just being able to help on special teams as well. So I try to just be versatile and try to help the team any way I can.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also gave Miller a ringing endorsement.
“He knows all the spots,” Tomlin said. “He’s highly conditioned. He’s very competitive. He’s a been-there, done-that guy, and so there’s a lot of value in his presence.”
Miller, 27, spent the 2024 season with the Steelers, recording five catches for 69 yards in 13 games.
The 5-foot-9, 179-pound wide receiver has the ability to take the top off the defense, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and a 4.02-second short shuttle at his pro day.
Before signing with Atlanta in 2023, Miller spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him out of Bowling Green in the sixth round (No. 208 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He played in 10 games and made two starts as a rookie in 2019, and saw his workload increase in 2020, when he started five games, played in all 16 and caught 33 passes for a career-high 501 yards and two touchdowns. In 2020, Miller was catching passes from the greatest quarterback in NFL history in Tom Brady. He sees a lot of similarities in Aaron Rodgers, who’s also one of the most decorated QB in league history.
“They’re similar in that way,” Miller said. “You don’t get to where they are without being extremely detail-oriented.”
Miller had a key 39-yard touchdown reception against the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFC Championship game. The play occurred right before halftime, with Brady finding Miller on a go route in the end zone to extend Tampa Bay’s lead to 28-10. It’s a play that Rodgers remembers well.
“The first time I met (Rodgers) at the (Steelers) facility at minicamp. He was like, ‘I’m still mad at you for that play,’ because we knocked him out right before heading to the Super Bowl,” Miller said. “So it’s been fun kind of seeing his perspective on that game, on that play, and just kind of going back and forth with him.”
Rodgers and Miller have been building a close bond at St. Vincent College. Miller sees a big difference already compared to last year’s offensive unit.
“It’s different. The one thing I’ve noticed with Aaron is just his timing is like — if you’re not ready, or you don’t...
