The Green Bay Packers seem like they’re prepared to shut down running back MarShawn Lloyd, who has only played one game in the two years since the Packers turned in a third-round pick for him. Lloyd injured his hamstring this summer, leading to him being placed on the injured reserve at the roster cutdown deadline. Since returning, Lloyd has been dealing with a calf injury. Last week, though, Lloyd was also given a hamstring designation on the injury report.

When asked about the situation on Tuesday, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur said the team is still searching for answers for why the back continues to suffer soft tissue injuries. The Packers have one week to decide whether or not to activate Lloyd to the 53-man roster. If they don’t do that, Lloyd will revert to the injured reserve for the remainder of the season, per the rules for players who are designated to return from the injured reserve but aren’t called up during their 21-day practice window.

On the topic of Lloyd having a chance to play this year, LaFleur stated, “I’m not going to say not, but you can use deductive reasoning.” Without Lloyd, the Packers will have Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks on the 53-man roster. The only other Green Bay player who will be available for practices after this week will be practice squad running back Pierre Strong Jr., who has already exhausted his three practice squad elevations this year.

This means that Strong would have to be a member of the 53-man roster, which would require a corresponding roster move if any of Jacobs, Wilson or Brooks are unavailable going into a game. Generally, the Packers have kept three or four running backs on the 48-man gameday roster throughout LaFleur’s tenure in Green Bay.

Beyond the Lloyd situation, LaFleur stated that pass-rusher Micah Parsons hasn’t had surgery yet. He also stated that the other injuries that the Packers are dealing with, including but not limited to receiver Christian Watson (chest), right tackle Zach Tom (knee) and safety Evan Williams (knee), are considered day-to-day.

Green Bay will have a walkthrough on Tuesday and a modified practice on Wednesday, as the team has a short week turnaround to face the Chicago Bears on Saturday night.
