The Miami Dolphins have lost running back Alexander Mattison for the 2025 NFL season following a neck injury that will require surgery.

Mattison suffered the injury during a 21-yard pass play in the Dolphins’ preseason outing against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. He went down after a tackle, and it was immediately apparent that he was hurt.

He was taken to a nearby Chicago hospital, where scans determined he would need surgery.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins earlier in the offseason, having suited up for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, making 14 appearances, half of which were starts.

Before that, he was on the Minnesota Vikings’ roster, spending five years with the team and rushing for over 2,700 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel initially downplayed the severity of the injury, claiming the player had “neck and shoulder soreness.” So, the fact that his season is over comes as a surprise.

“Dolphins RB Alexander Mattison has a neck injury that requires surgery, per sources. He’s expected to make a full recovery but will be out for the 2025 season,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday. “Has full strength and motion.”

Alexander Mattison Expected To Make A Full Recovery Following Season-Ending Operation

While the injury is a serious one, team sources expect Alexander Mattison to make a full recovery.

In the meantime, the team is exploring other backfield options, with veteran Jamaal Williams reportedly working out with them and being considered a possible replacement.

The Dolphins’ running back room is currently made up of De’Vin Achane, Jaylen Wright, and rookie Ollie Gordon.

The injury to Mattison comes as a significant blow, but the team is optimistic about his long-term health and recovery.
