Dolphins release long-time former 49ers running back

Raheem Mostert spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The team released him Friday afternoon, and he is now a free agent.

Brett Tessler, a name we are familiar with, announced his client Raheem Mostert will be playing elsewhere in 2025. Tessler tweeted that this gives the Dolphins an opportunity to get younger and gives Mostert a chance to pursue a ring elsewhere.

The San Francisco 49ers could have used a veteran running back this season to help show Isaac Guerendo the ropes once Christian McCaffrey was injured, and Jordan Mason went on the Injured Reserve.

Mostert is coming off a career-low 3.3 yards per carry this past season. He only had 85 carries and turns 32 in April. In Mostert’s defense, he stayed healthy during the two previous seasons in Miami. He had 181 and 209 carries in each year and averaged over 4.8 yards per carry. Plus, the speed element Mostert brings is always enticing.

Mason is a restricted free agent. It’s unclear what his future is with the 49ers. But, assuming the prices for Mason and Mostert are similar, Mason’s age makes him far more attractive unless another team poaches him.

Mostert made a name for himself with the Niners after going from a special-teamer to their lead running back in 2019. But the last exposure the 49ers had to Mostert was in 2021, when he did not make it through the first quarter of the first game of the season. That was three seasons ago. That chapter is likely closed.

If the 49ers are looking to add a running back this offseason, they’d be best suited to pursue options in the draft.
