The Miami Dolphins fell to the Buffalo Bills by a score of 31-21 on Thursday night, bringing their record on the 2025 season to 0-3. The loss will surely only increase pressure around embattled head coach Mike McDaniel, who seems to be on the hottest seat in the league right now.

Now in his fourth seasons as the Miami Dolphins head coach, the 42-year-old Mike McDaniel began his head coaching career in promising fashion, as he led the Dolphins to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons, and an 11-win season in 2023.

Last year, however, the Dolphins finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs, and have now followed that up with an 0-3 start to the season. Now, habits that were previously passable when they were winning have become more exacerbated now that they’re losing.

Mike McDaniel’s previous leniency with poor practice effort and tardiness now coming back to bite the Miami Dolphins

According to a report from The Athletic, “while successfully changing the Dolphins’ culture and improving the workplace environment, McDaniel was at times overly lenient with star players such as wide receiver Tyreek Hill and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, forgiving poor practice efforts and other behavior perceived by teammates and assistant coaches as selfish.”

“Everyone was fine with cutting meetings, cutting practice when they’re winning, but once you’re losing, it’s like now you can’t get mad at that. You were just enjoying it when you were winning,” a Dolphins player told ESPN.

The Athletic adds that while “McDaniel has been intentional in his attempt to tighten up the operation, it’s always easier to go from stricter to more permissive in the locker room than to do the opposite.”

The Dolphins have certainly looked like a disorganized operation through the first three weeks of the season as they’ve allowed a whopping 97 points against the Bills, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.
