The Miami Dolphins are about to begin their search for a new general manager after letting Chris Grier go after a 28-6 Week 9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. On Thursday, it was announced that the organization is seeking the help of Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman in their search.

Reports indicate that the Dolphins are bringing in the Hall of Fame quarterback as a consultant to assist with hiring a general manager, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It’s also said that the role is not considered to be long-term, as Aikman’s role will only be relevant for the hiring process of the next general manager.

“The Miami Dolphins have brought on Hall-of-Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant to advise the organization on its general manager search process, per sources. It is not a permanent role, but he will be an advisor throughout the process for the Dolphins’ next GM.”

Troy Aikman is going to sit in on interviews and work a similar role as Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers when he joined the Washington Commanders in their search for a new head coach and general manager, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. The former quarterback turned ESPN analyst will use his connections around the league to help with the search, and Pelissero claims that Aikman is not considered a candidate for the Dolphins’ GM job.

“Aikman, who has mused in the past about becoming a GM himself, is not considered a candidate for the position. But given Aikman’s connections around the league, including through his weekly Monday Night Football assignments, he has relationships around the league that he can lean on to gather information and shape the search.

“Aikman is expected to sit in on interviews as part of his role. The philosophy is similar to how the Commanders utilized former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers in their coaching and GM searches two years ago. Unlike Myers, Aikman is not expected to stay with the organization beyond the search.”

The Dolphins will officially begin their general manager search on January 5, when the regular season officially ends. Until then, Champ Kelly will continue serving as the interim general manager.
