The Phinsider
It’s official. The Miami Dolphins have benched Tua Tagovailoa in favor for the rookie seventh round pick, Quinn Ewers. Mike McDaniel hinted at a change at quarterback the other day and the writing has been on the wall for Tua all season long with his struggles. There’s obviously a lot of moving parts with this decision.
The team gets to see what Ewers would look like with starting reps during the week. If he looks good, that’s great. That means there are some developmental tools there and they can invest in him as a backup quarterback (let’s not expect a Brock Purdy situation here). If he comes out and is unable to operate as a starter and racks up some losses, that’s not a bad situation either for draft position.
Now we get to the tricky parts. McDaniel will get to operate the offense with a different quarterback. No matter who is in as starter, this team established a dominant run game this season. Remain committed to the run game and help alleviate some pressure from Ewers. If the offense remains stagnant, it’s probably time for a change at head coach. If the offense shows signs of life, maybe it’s still time for a change at head coach but McDaniel shows what he can do with a new QB.
As for Tua, who knows what to expect next. With him on the bench and with a huge paycheck in his back pocket, it just appears to be over. Whether McDaniel is back or there’s a new head coach, it just seems unlikely that Tua will be the starter next year. Tua’s contract makes this whole situation a mess.
Whatever happens over the next three games, it should be an interesting offseason to follow. The Dolphins have to find a new general manager, there may be a search for a new head coach, but there will definitely be a ton of quarterback news.
