Klint Kubiak’s departure makes New Orleans a potential landing spot for recently fired Texans OC Bobby Slowik.
With former New Orleans Saints OC Klint Kubiak taking the same position with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, the Saints are now looking for their third offensive play caller in as many years. The team has considered several offensive-minded head coach candidates who could take over play-calling duties from Kubiak. They’ve already completed an in-person interview with New York Giants OC Mike Kafka and have plans to interview Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore and former Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy for the vacant position. Additionally, they requested to interview Washington Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury, but he has yet to respond. Now that the Commanders have been eliminated, they may be able to convince him to fly in for an interview. However, it’s looking unlikely he’ll leave Jayden Daniels after just one season.
That said, it’s still possible the Saints decide to go in the direction of Darren Rizzi or Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver. Here’s a potential candidate to be the next OC of the black and gold, whether as play caller or to further develop under an established offensive mind:
On Friday, the Houston Texans made the surprising decision to part ways with one of the 2024 coaching cycle’s hottest head coach candidates in OC Bobby Slowik.
Slowik had an impressive start to his tenure in Houston. He played a pivotal role in the development of 2023 AP OROTY C.J. Stroud, who delivered one of the best rookie quarterback campaigns we’ve ever seen while leading the 10-7 Texans to their first postseason appearance since 2019 and securing a Wild Card playoff win at just 22 years old. So, to see one of the league’s rising offensive minds already out of a job just a year later, something had to have gone wrong, right?
Ultimately, they just didn’t take the leap that many envisioned despite adding shiny new weaponry in players like All-Pro WR Stefon Diggs and Pro Bowl RB Joe Mixon. They finished the regular season with the 17th-ranked total offense averaging 21.9 PPG (19th) and 319.7 YPG (22nd). However, they suffered several key injuries down the stretch which certainly didn’t help Slowik, Stroud, or the rest of the offense’s case.
Stroud finished the 2024 season with 3,727 passing yards, 20 touchdown passes, and 12 interceptions, compared to the 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdown passes, and just 5 interceptions thrown his rookie year. And while the sophomore slump was real for Stroud, Houston believes a significant portion of these setbacks stemmed from the lack of adjustments in Slowik’s scheme from the previous season and that opposing teams were able to quickly catch onto their tendencies in 2025—blocking in particular. This eventually led to the decision to part ways with Slowik and consider taking a more innovative approach at offensive coordinator next season.
Personally, I feel like it could be worth looking into, especially if New Orleans ends up rolling into 2025...
