With Quintin Morris elsewhere, does the big man have a shot at making the 53-man roster this year?

The Buffalo Bills have invested heavily in their top two tight ends. One player is a first-round draft choice — the first such player to hold that designation at the tight end position for the Bills since Tony Hunter was chosen in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, just two picks ahead of some other guy you might remember. The other is a former third-round choice who signed a massive contract extension after his rookie deal expired.

That means the top two spots on the depth chart at tight end are really spoken for already. The competition at this position isn’t for a starting gig, or even for second-fiddle status. The real competition is for the player who will be the third tight end on the 53-man roster.

In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days,” we discuss a tight end who played in his first regular-season game last season.

Name: Zach Davidson
Number: 84
Position: TE
Height/Weight: 6’7”, 251 pounds
Age: 26 (27 on 7/15/2025)
Experience/Draft: 2; selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round (No. 168 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft
College: Central Missouri
Acquired: Originally signed with Buffalo’s practice squad on 9/1/2022

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Davidson signed a two-year reserve/future contract in January. That deal is worth a total of $2.042 million. If he makes the 53-man roster, Davidson carries a cap hit of $963,500 for the season. If he’s released, Buffalo will be on the hook for a dead-cap charge of $7,000, which is the total of the guaranteed money on the deal.

2024 Recap: Davidson spent the offseason and the preseason with Buffalo once again, appearing in all three of the team’s exhibition games. He started one game and saw six targets, catching five passes for 50 yards. He didn’t make the 53-man roster out of camp, but he signed to the Bills’ practice squad after final roster cuts were made.

Davidson saw action in two regular-season games for Buffalo as a practice squad call-up, with the first being Buffalo’s 30-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, and the second being Buffalo’s 44-42 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He played around 20% of the offensive snaps in those two games, and he caught his first career pass in the win over the Chiefs. It was a five-yard completion on Buffalo’s second drive of the second half. He did not appear in a postseason game.

Positional outlook: Davidson is one of five tight ends on the current roster. Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox return from last year, and the team added two rookie tight ends this offseason when they drafted Jackson Hawes and signed Keleki Latu.

2025 Offseason: Davidson is healthy and participating in offseason work.

2025 Season outlook: Davidson displayed some ability last year, both as a blocker and as a receiver, in limited action. His strength is as...
