Sometimes the life of a quarterback is that you are saved by a teammate and become the hero, whereas the life of an undrafted receiver is that you make the play of the year but are left out of the headlines. There’s a lot of talk this week about how Stetson Bennett has “developed into a player to watch” in front out of every eyes, and yet he’s just the losing quarterback of the Rams without a game-winning touchdown on his resume if not for Brennan Presley.

Folks, Bennett was merely playing “500” with the game on the line and nowhere to go but downfield. Presley made the play that saved the Rams on Saturday.

Unfortunately for Presley, Bennett’s chances of making the 53-man roster are far greater than his, and in spite of the fact that Presley would be more likely to do something positive for the team in the regular season than a third-string quarterback. Is there any way that Brennan Presley can make the Rams?

Probably not. At least, not out of training camp.

An undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State, setting a Cowboys school record with 315 career receptions in five seasons. That includes a ridiculous 101-catch season in 2023, albeit only for 991 yards, and 90 catches for 767 yards in 2024.

But at 5’8, there’s only nowhere he needs to go but “up” to make the NFL. That obviously isn’t going to happen, so Presley is fighting the uphill battle to ever make a roster in his professional football career. Presley is dramatically undersized for an NFL player, as seen here in his “3rd percentile” and “4th percentile” height and weight at NFLDraftBuzz:

Perhaps worse yet is that his 4.46 40-yard dash is nothing special for a wide receiver or return specialist, especially one who only weighs 175. If Presley ran a 4.30 or faster, we might have something to talk about, but that is not the case. His short-shuttle and 3-cone times are very good, but not elite either.

What we have is undersized, “NFL normal speed” receiver buried on a depth chart of players physically gifted enough to make the league at the position. NFL Draft Buzz highlights his route running and football IQ, but can’t get past the size/speed worries:

Brennan Presley is a dynamic slot receiver who brings versatility and high football IQ to the field. His reliable hands, crisp route-running, and ability to rack up yards after the catch make him a valuable weapon in the passing game. As a proven leader and consistent performer, he offers immediate contributions on special teams and as a reliable third-down target.

However, Presley’s size at 5’8″ and 175 pounds presents concerns about his durability and physicality at the next level. He lacks elite top-end speed and struggles to create separation against more physical defenders. His run blocking and ability to make contested catches in tight coverage are areas needing improvement, which might limit his role in certain offensive...
