BALTIMORE — Someone of DK Metcalf’s value isn’t supposed to cover punts. Anything goes when the Pittsburgh Steelers face off with the Baltimore Ravens, though.

After Aaron Rodgers fired an incomplete pass at Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a third-and-7 from their team’s own 11-yard line, Metcalf didn’t head to the sideline. He’d stayed on thinking that he was filling in for fellow wideout Ben Skowronek.

Ravens special teamers Tylan Wallace and T.J. Tampa were tasked with trying to keep the 6-foot-4, 230-pound receiver from getting to returner LaJohntay Wester.

“Skow was on the sideline saying his finger was hurting, so I told him, ‘I got you,'” Metcalf said afterward. “I saw him run out on the field and I went to the other side.”

“That was crazy,” Steelers safety Jabrill Peppers said. “I’m like, ‘(Does) he think it’s, like, third down still?’ I’m wondering what’s going on. … (He was like) ‘I know! I know!’ Alright, fuck it, come on. Ben was just as shocked as I was, but we seen it in his eyes. We (were) like, ‘Alright.’ Ben just went to the other side.”

Metcalf added that he had one rep as a gunner in college. According to Pro Football Reference, he has two career NFL stops.

“He wasn’t supposed to be out there,” Steelers cornerback James Pierre said. “I should’ve taken it, but I’ll take the rap for it.”

Aside from his special teams appearance, Metcalf had his best day in black and gold. He registered seven grabs for 148 yards in the Steelers’ 27-22 win. He took a hard shot during the matchup, causing the team to keep him behind and be checked at a hospital as a precaution.
