The newest Steelers weapon speaks highly of an underrated gem
The Pittsburgh Steelers made a splash trade for wide receiver DK Metcalf this past March and immediately gave him an extension with four new years and $132 million in new money for the Ole Miss product.
Metcalf donned Steelers gear for the first time during the first day of mandatory mini-camp. On Tuesday, he was made available to the media and had nothing but good things to say about wideout Calvin Austin.
“He’s a little jitterbug out there,” Metcalf said via Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. “But he’s explosive as heck.”
Metcalf isn’t the only one with high praise for the fourth-year receiver out of Memphis. Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni declared that Austin is the WR2 on the depth chart as things currently stand.
Austin is coming off his best year as a pro, catching 36 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns He also returned a punt for a score against the New York Giants. Should the Steelers not acquire another receiver to be the No. 2 boundary starter, Austin will need to see those numbers grow in a bigger role.
