“Super Bowl or bust.” It’s a phrase that just about every NFL team adopts every season. Anything short of that is considered a failure by most team standards. At least, that’s the line they have to repeat publicly; otherwise, it looks like the team isn’t giving it their all each year.
However, that bar isn’t always realistic for each team. Beyond that, if an organization just shows year-to-year growth, it could be a sign that a championship is coming in the future.
The Detroit Lions have been in contention for a title over the past three years and have come up short each time. For many, the only step this team has to make is finally winning a Super Bowl, and anything less than that is a failure. But others may be just hoping for some serious progress from a disappointing 9-8 season last year.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
My answer: At the very least, the Lions need to win the NFC North and win a playoff game.
Obviously, I’m just as hungry as everyone else for a Lions championship. And I’d even take a Super Bowl appearance at this point. And to be honest, I do think it’s entirely possible for this team to make a championship run.
But as a fan, I do not adhere to “Super Bowl or bust.” If you do, I certainly get it. We’ve waited long enough. It’s a stain on this franchise that they haven’t even made it to The Big Game.
However, I’m just looking for a deeply competitive season in which the Lions deliver a respectable performance. Winning this division would be a big triumph given how competitive it is supposed to be. Additionally, it would be nice to shut up Bears fans who believe this division is theirs for the next generation. Oh, and keeping the Packers division title-less for five straight years would be their longest drought since 1994. I like that.
But the 2024 season is a stark reminder that a division title and a 15-2 record isn’t satisfying without at least a playoff win. So if Detroit can win a division title and tally another postseason win, that would satisfy me as a successful season and an important step in the right direction. Admittedly, that’s a bit of a low bar, and I may not actually be satisfied unless they at least make the NFC Championship Game, but it’s also important to remember where this team came from. We begged for decades to just make the playoffs here and there. Sure, the bar has been raised by this organization, but I also don’t want to become jaded and lose an appreciation for a competitive, entertaining team—even if they fail to win a championship.
