With three weeks in the books for the 2025 NFL season, we’re starting to get a better sense of which teams are contenders and which are pretenders. It’s still early, and the trajectories of teams could drastically change over the next three months. For example, I don’t expect the 1-2 Baltimore Ravens or the 1-2 Kansas City Chiefs to be down for that long. On the other end of the spectrum, can the 3-0 Indianapolis Colts, 2-1 Jaguars, or Steelers keep the good vibes coming?
But, for now, let’s just talk about the top teams in the NFL. We’ve already seen earlier in the week that national power rankings tend to have the Detroit Lions right there inside the top-five after their convincing win over the Ravens. Which teams are their biggest competition right now for a Super Bowl title?

My answer: Here’s my current mini power rankings.
Honorable mentions go to the Rams, Buccaneers, and Colts—who were considered for that final spot.
I know the Bills have serious questions about their defense, but their offense is humming, and Josh Allen is tough to beat. The Eagles certainly got a bit lucky in their win over the Rams—which is why LA was seriously considered for the five spot—but until someone can unseat the champs, they have to be in the top two.
Y’all will probably not like me putting the Packers above the Lions, but it doesn’t quite seem fair to seed the Lions higher after getting handled in Week 1. Maybe the Lions are already the better team after making adjustments, but with sample sizes so low, the head-to-head matchup carries a lot of weight.
As for the Chargers, they probably have the biggest argument for underseeding. They have a very well-balanced team, ranking ninth in offensive DVOA and seventh on defense. And their resume is pretty solid with wins over the Chiefs and Broncos. I just need a little more proof to fully believe in a team that got bounced handily in the Wild Card round last year.
