With the Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly close to signing Aaron Rodgers, some fans are wondering if he’ll grace Terry Bradshaw’s iconic No. 12.
Terry Bradshaw wore No. 12 during his Hall of Fame career with the Steelers, whom he led to four Super Bowl championships. Rodgers wore the same number with the Green Bay Packers, but switched to No. 8 with the New York Jets since the organization retired 12 in honor of Joe Namath.
Surprisingly, Bradshaw’s No. 12 has never been retied by the Steelers. Assuming Rodgers wants that number, it could create a bit of awkwardness among Bradshaw, the organization and Steeler fans.
But during a recent Q&A with readers, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that retiring the No. 12 isn’t in the cards at this time.
“I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon,” Dulac wrote.
A organization like Pittsburgh, with a plethora of Hall of Famers, has surprisingly only retired the jersey numbers to date: Ernie Stautner (No. 70), Franco Harris (32) and ‘Mean’ Joe Greene (75).
There’s a possibility that Terry Bradshaw will give his blessing to Rodgers to adopt No. 12. But to some longtime Steeler fans, something won’t sit right about Rodgers wearing the very number that Bradshaw made iconic over half a century ago.
For now, the Steelers continue to await a final verdict from Rodgers.
There’s a long list of notable quarterbacks who wore the No. 12. That group includes Hall of Famers Tom Brady, Jim Kelly, Ken Stabler, Bob Griese and Roger Staubach, along with Bradshaw, Namath and Rodgers.
