Did Steelers Make Massive Mistake at Wide Receiver?

There is a belief that the Pittsburgh Steelers downgraded at wide receiver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally acquired a No. 2 wide receiver this offseason, trading the Indianapolis Colts for veteran Michael Pittman Jr. However, there seems to be a belief that they could have had a much better wide receiver duo.

Sports Illustrated recently ranked Pittman as the ninth-best wide receiver in the NFL, behind former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, who came in at the top of the list at No. 1.

Pickens has certainly brought some baggage to wherever he has played throughout the start to his professional career, but it is difficult to argue against his production.

Last season, Pickens recorded a career-high 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys.

Meanwhile, Pittman is coming off a bit of a down season, during which he had 80 catches for 784 yards and seven touchdowns.

Those aren’t bad numbers by any means, but it has to have some Steelers fans wondering what could have been with DK Metcalf and Pickens, instead.

Not everyone is so low on Pittman, though. Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison believes Pittman could be in store for the best season of his NFL career.

“I think Pittman could have the best year that he’s had so far because he’s a great route runner,” Harrison said on his Deebo & Joe podcast. “He uses his body for positioning. He’s great in traffic. He can catch that ball with his hands, you know? And he can read defense because he can find soft spots in his zone.”

Only time will tell if he will be right, but as of now, it looks like the Steelers have gotten older and less productive at the position.
