San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is once again making headlines, and once again it has very little to do with what he’s doing on the football field.

The former All-Pro receiver recently took to Instagram to vent his frustrations with the 49ers, calling the organization “stupid” while expressing his displeasure with how his contract situation has unfolded.

Steelers fans may remember that Pittsburgh was heavily linked to Aiyuk during his lengthy contract saga two offseasons ago. At one point, the Steelers were viewed as one of the most likely landing spots if San Francisco decided to move him. Ultimately, no deal ever came together.

“You wanna know why they really mad, though? They mad ’cause they stupid. They dumb,” Aiyuk said. “They mad that they paid me $50 million in eight months, and they voided my guarantees for 2026. And I’m about to be on a new team in 2026.”

Whether there is any truth behind Aiyuk’s comments remains to be seen, but it’s another layer in what has become a rocky stretch for a player who not long ago looked like one of the NFL’s brightest young receivers.

There’s no denying the talent. Aiyuk posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and developed into one of the focal points of San Francisco’s offense. But since signing his four-year, $120 million extension following a prolonged holdout, things have seemingly gone in the wrong direction.

Aiyuk hasn’t played since suffering a torn ACL in Week 7 of the 2024 season. Recovering from that injury is challenging enough on its own, but it has been accompanied by a steady stream of distractions away from football.

Most recently, reports surfaced that an arrest warrant had been issued in Santa Clara County stemming from a misdemeanor traffic violation. The incident reportedly traces back to a video Aiyuk posted showing himself driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph near Levi’s Stadium.

None of this means Aiyuk can’t turn things around. He’s still only 28 years old and has already proven he can perform at an elite level when healthy. At the same time, it’s fair to say the optimism surrounding him isn’t what it once was.

For Steelers fans who spent months hoping Pittsburgh would acquire Aiyuk, the situation serves as a reminder that the biggest move isn’t always the best move. While Aiyuk remains a talented player, the combination of injuries, contract disputes, and off-field issues has made his future far murkier than anyone could have expected just a few years ago.
