To say that the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offense has regressed this season might be a massive understatement. New offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo took everything that worked under Kellen Moore and threw it out the window.

However, as disappointing as things have been for superstars like Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown, life hasn’t been so bad for DeVonta Smith lately. As pointed out by NFL analyst John Clark on X, the former Heisman trophy winner is on pace for a career year:

“DeVonta Smith is on pace for a career high 1241 receiving yards. He is third in the NFL in receiving yards per target and has been one of the best third down receivers in the NFL. He has the fourth highest catch rate in the NFL behind Puka Nacua, Stefon Diggs, and Amon Ra St Brown,” Clark posted on X.

Smith is one of the most talented big-play specialists in the game. Unlike most speedsters, he actually has reliable hands and a deep route tree.

It always felt like he could’ve been more involved in the team’s passing game. But with Jalen Hurts’ apparent limitations and Brown’s dominance as the team’s primary pass catcher, that wasn’t the case. Now, with Brown barely getting involved in the passing game, either by design or by coincidence, he’s become the focal point of Kevin Patullo’s offense.

Even so, despite the team’s positive record and three-game winning streak, it still feels like the Eagles aren’t as dominant as they used to be. Their offense is vanilla and predictable, constantly giving up the play as soon as they line up at the line of scrimmage.

That could come back to haunt them when it matters most. But even if that’s the case, having an elite pass catcher like DeVonta Smith should always help them have a chance to make a crucial play.
