Detroit Lions to cut former third-round pick

The Detroit Lions are parting ways with defensive tackle Brodric Martin, as first reported by AtoZ Sports’ Mike Payton.

Martin was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Having played college ball at Western Kentucky, there was a belief that Martin had strong developmental potential. Not only did Martin have good speed for his size, but his 35-inch arms were longer than any other defensive tackle in his draft class.

However, through two seasons, Martin had not made a notable impact on the team. He played in just five games and only managed four tackles over the span. He did show a little growth this offseason, particularly in his pass rush. PFF credited him with four pressures and an 82.3 pass rushing grade in 36 pass rush opportunities this preseason.

However, Martin had an extremely uphill battle at the start of training camp. With DJ Reader returning, the Lions signing Roy Lopez in free agency, and drafting Tyleik Williams in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, there wasn’t much room on the roster for a run-stuffing big body on the defensive line.

Detroit may want to see through his development on their practice squad, but Martin must pass through waivers first. And with intriguing physical traits and a “former third-round pick” label on him, it’s quite possible he won’t make it back to the Lions—if they’re interested.

Martin now joins Hendon Hooker as the first two Day 2 draft picks cut under general manager Brad Holmes.

In addition to Martin, the Lions are also reporting cutting DT Myles Adams, Nate Lynn, and RB Deon Jackson, all per Dave Birkett.
