Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most dangerous players in the entire NFL with the ball in his hands. Which is exactly why the Lions try to get him as many touches as possible in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.

Unfortunately for Detroit, that didn’t result in much success this time around. Gibbs carried the ball just nine times for 19 yards in Sunday’s 27-13 loss at Lambeau Field. But he also had 10 receptions.

Those 10 receptions, however, went for just 31 yards, an NFL record for the least receiving yards for a player with double-digit receptions in a game.

A weird receiving stat line for Jahmyr Gibbs today: 10 catches for 31 yards.

That’s the fewest receiving yards in a game where a player had at least 10 catches in NFL history.

Jahmyr Gibbs Is Learning A New Role For The Detroit Lions

Gibbs had a breakout season a year ago under superstar offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. But now Johnson is gone, as the new head coach of the NFC North rival Chicago Bears.

In his place stands journeyman NFL assistant John Morton, who is using Gibbs a bit different to the way that Johnson had previouly.

“I gotta learn the formations for being split out,” Gibbs said prior to the season, via WXYT Detroit. “I’m being split out like way more than I was the past two years. That’s good. That’s going to be fun. I’ve been waiting on that.”

As it turns out, being split out more was not as fun as Gibbs expected. Sure, he touched the ball a lot. But he did so in a way that was not exactly conducive to offensive success.

Still, Lions coach Dan Campbell isn’t worried.

“I thought we would be cleaner than we were. I thought we’d be much cleaner than we were,” Campbell said postgame. “And it wasn’t as clean, but there again, you’re talking about a few plays that were critical. But, like I told the team, these are so correctable. Everything that showed up is so correctable, and we will hit it head-on.”

Gibbs is too talented to be held down for long. But it’s probably going to be a while before someone breaks his now infamous NFL record.
