The Detroit Lions are waiving wide receiver Jackson Meeks, according to a report from the Detroit News’ Nolan Bianchi.

Meeks made a very strong impression during the preseason, leading the team with 176 receiving yards on 11 catches. He also found the endzone twice and played a good amount of special teams both in training camp and during the preseason.

Despite that, the Lions have a very crowded wide receiver room, and this likely means they are carrying no more than six players at that position. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond, Isaac TeSlaa, and Tim Patrick are all expected to make the team. Meeks was in consideration for the WR6 spot, along with rookie seventh-round pick Dominic Lovett and veteran Ronnie Bell. This could be a good sign that Lovett makes the 53-man roster, but that is far from guaranteed at this point.

Meeks will be subject to the waiver wire, and it will be interesting to see if someone is intrigued by his 6-foot-3 frame and productive preseason. The Lions handed him $200,000 in contract guarantees, suggesting he may have been a high-priority UDFA. So if Meeks does clear waivers, don’t be surprised if he comes back to the Lions’ practice squad.

In addition to Meeks, the Lions have also reportedly waived Nick Whiteside. Added to the Lions late in camp after a season with the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks, Whiteside had a strong start to camp, but struggled in Detroit’s preseason finale against the Texans.
