Detroit Lions Chasing Offensive Genius to Replace Fired OC

After a wildly successful 15-win campaign in 2024, the Detroit Lions regressed in many ways in 2025. Losing offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs elsewhere surely played a big factor.

Both the offense and defense took a step back, but coach Dan Campbell wasn’t particularly happy with the performance on offense. Shortly after the regular season ended, the Lions announced that they had moved on from first-year offensive coordinator John Morton. Now they’re seeking his replacement.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Lions have already reached out to former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, who was just fired on Wednesday. Detroit obviously envisions McDaniel coming in to coordinate their offense and likely take over playcalling duties away from coach Campbell, allowing him to focus more on other gameday duties relating to all three phases of the game.

While Campbell remains open to calling plays, he also admitted that he’d have no issues relying on someone else to make those split-second decisions, especially if they have a knack for it. McDaniel may have worn out his welcome in South Beach, but he’s viewed as one of the brightest offensive minds in football.

He’d surely help stabilize an already good offense and bring in new concepts that could help Detroit’s scoring attack become even more dangerous on a weekly basis. Plus, his arrival could lead to the injection of more playmakers that McDaniel is familiar with, perhaps even Tyreek Hill.
