Derek Carr officially retired from the NFL this past weekend after suffering a season-ending injury with the Saints. The decision put an end to an 11-year professional career that saw stops with three different organizations.

Carr left a ton of money on the table by walking away. That didn’t seem to bother him in his first day of retirement.

The passer’s wife posted a video recap of life off the football field, something he hasn’t truly experienced in more than a decade. Carr enjoyed the free time with family.

Relaxation was likely welcomed given the beating his body’s taken as an NFL quarterback. Most recently, he hurt his throwing shoulder which will lead to surgery. It was announced that the setback will cause “significant degenerative changes” to his rotator cuff.

Rather than rehab and return in 2026, he chose to call it a day. In doing so, he left a guaranteed $30 million on the table.

The injured Carr retired Saturday after agreeing to forfeit his $30 million fully guaranteed salary in 2025 in exchange for keeping the $10 million roster bonus paid in March.”

Carr will be able to keep all of his $28.5 million initial signing bonus from 2023. New Orleans will not try to recoup a portion of the money. Instead, each side is giving a bit in order to make a clean split.

Derek Carr will not play for the Saints in 2025. From his wife’s latest account, he looked happy in Day 1 of retirement. Is it permanent, or will he play elsewhere in the future?

Ross Tucker wouldn’t be surprised to see Derek Carr unretire.

“NFL players do not voluntarily give up $30 million. Nobody does. Which means that the Saints…”

“I’m not 100% convinced that Derek Carr never plays football again,” Tucker said of his future. “This might be a financial short-term marriage. We’ll see what ends up happening.”

His reasoning in that suggestion relates to that previously mentioned compromise between Carr and New Orleans. Tucker hinted at a potential agreement that kept the quarterback from chasing the extra $30 million.

Tucker says there’s a possibility that the Saints would’ve fought against having to pay Carr to not play. Instead of entering war, the sides called a truce.

Derek Carr is no longer a professional QB. That may or may not be temporary. For now, he’ll take what money he can and enjoy the offseason. We’ll then see what the future holds.
