The Denver Broncos released their unofficial depth chart for the preseason earlier today, ahead of their preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers this Saturday. This gives us our first unofficial look at the Broncos’ depth chart as they head into the preseason. Now, we need to keep in mind that this depth chart does not mean much in the grand scheme of things. Sean Payton downplayed his involvement in it last season, and it is only being announced because they have to do one.
Like last year when Bo Nix was listed as the third-string quarterback, all rookies are at the back of the line. We know that is not the reality, so we shouldn’t make too much out of it. Despite that, we’ll take a look at it and see if we can gain any real knowledge from it.
So, with all that said, here is the Denver Broncos’ initial unofficial depth chart as they prepare to take on the 49ers in their preseason opener this Saturday.
Thoughts
- Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims Jr. are listed as the Broncos’ WR1 and WR2, with Devaughn Vele and Troy Franklin behind each on the depth chart.
- No real surprises along the offense line. Frank Crum is your third-string LT, Nick Gargiulo is your backup RG, and the rest of the rookies are at the back of the line. We’ll find out more about where these players stand during the preseason.
- Tight end is what you would expect with Lohner getting the rookie treatment.
- R.J. Harvey is listed as the RB6 on the depth chart, when in reality, he has been getting plenty of first-team reps. Jaleel McLaughlin is your RB2, Estime is your RB3, and Tyler Badie and Blake Watson round out the group.
- QB room is set.
Thoughts
- No real surprises on the defensive side of the ball when it comes to starters. CB Ja’Quan McMillian is listed as the starting slot corner only because rookie Jahdae Barron is getting the rookie treatment on the depth chart. Barring a surprise, Barron will be your starting slot corner this season.
- Even on the backup/reserve side, there are no real surprises for the defense, and it looks as expected.
- Right now, safety Devon Key is ahead of JL Skinner, Keidron Smith, Delarrin Turner-Yell, and Sam Franklin Jr. on the depth chart.
Thoughts
- Everything looks as expected here with Lutz as your kicker, Crawshaw the punter, and Fraboni as the long snapper.
- Two-time All-Pro returner Marvin Mims will be the Broncos’ top return man, with Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie, and rookie receiver Courtney Jackson getting looks as kick returner. Michael Bandy and Jackson are your backup punt returners.
