Denver Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper arrested for violation of protection order

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper was arrested for the second time in a week on Thursday evening on a count of four charges: violation of a protection order, harassment – repeated telephone calls, domestic violence, and domestic violence – summons and complaint.

He was booked into the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s Detention Facility at 10:07 p.m. on June 11, according to official records. The offense date was listed as 6:17 p.m. He is in custody as of this morning and will appear before a judge at 8:30 a.m.

Cooper and his girlfriend were both arrested last week on charges of domestic violence for an initial incident that took place on June 4 where the record details that Cooper and his girlfriend got into an argument over cheating allegations. Cooper’s girlfriend admitted to grabbing and throwing Cooper’s phone across the room, then picked it up to go through it.

From that point, Cooper and the woman got into a physical struggle, and he grabbed her arm and took his phone back, according to the affidavit. After Cooper got the phone back, his girlfriend tried to take his phone again, and Cooper told police that he braced his neck against her neck to prevent her from getting it.

After the physical struggle was over, Cooper admitted he told her that he was going to break her phone if she did not leave the apartment, and that he bit her phone when she did not leave, causing “disabling damage,” according to the affidavit.

Cooper appeared in court on Monday where he pled not guilty, which led to a motions hearing being scheduled for July 6 and a jury trial being scheduled for July 22 and 23.

Prior to the recent incident taking place on Thursday evening, Cooper faced two new assault charges, a felony and a misdemeanor. The felony charge is for second-degree assault by strangulation, and a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault — knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury, according to court records out of Douglas County’s District Court.

From 9News: ‘The upcharges against Cooper appear to be a result of his girlfriend’s account of the incident to officer Victoria Rodriguez on the night of the incident. The girlfriend stated she had picked up Cooper’s cellphone, unlocked it and started reading its messages. As she was about to leave Cooper’s home, he “grabbed by her neck with one hand and lifted her feet off the ground and up against the wall,” according to the affidavit.

“I think the league has done a good job of kind of coming in and really taking over that responsibility,” Payton said. “We had a long visit with ‘Coop’ (OLB Jonathon Cooper), and now the process plays out. The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We’ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that’s where it’s at. We just go from there.”
