Shilo Sanders, the son of University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders, is the subject of a new lawsuit. Now, a law firm that represented him claims he owes them more than $164,000 in legal fees and interest.
The lawsuit was filed by Barnes & Thornburg LLP on Nov. 17 in the Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division. In it, according to documents reviewed by The Athletic, the attorneys claim they have made “multiple attempts to collect the amount outstanding,” but Shilo Sanders has not paid them a dime.
The law firm claims Shilo Sanders owes them money for legal services he received in connection with his personal injury case and subsequent bankruptcy. Sanders owes $11.89 million to a former school security guard named John Darjean. When Shilo Sanders was 15-years-old, he assaulted Darjean while he was working as a security guard at Sanders’ school in Dallas, leaving him with permanent injuries. Sanders filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 to avoid paying the judgment.
Shilo Sanders was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the season after being signed as an undrafted free agent. In April 2025, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services filed a motion to seize a car Shilo purchased in May of 2023. The company said he defaulted on the payments and owes $97,239.
During his appearance on the Colorado Football Coaches Show this week, Deion Sanders claimed that his son Shilo is getting sued for “something he didn’t even do.” The coach didn’t specify which incident he was referring to: the lawsuit for unpaid legal fees, or something else related to his son’s bankruptcy.
When John Darjean sued Shilo Sanders for the injuries he suffered, Sanders claimed in pre-trial proceedings that he was acting in self-defense. Then, when the case went to court in 2022, he failed to appear. In doing so, the judge awarded Darjean a default judgment of more than $11 million.
