University of Colorado head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders spoke extensively about his son Shedeur Sanders’ slide in the NFL Draft. Sanders was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the 5th Round of the NFL Draft (144th overall).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the ever-confident and never-wrong Deion Sanders dismissed the the narrative that his son Shedeur was ‘unprofessional’ in pre-draft meetings, which was one of the top reported reasons that he slide to the fifth round.

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders was expected to be taken in either the late first or second round, with ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper having a particularly embarrassing on-air meltdown over the 23-year-old’s slide.

“When you sit up there and say something like he went into a meeting unprepared, like dude, Shedeur Sanders, who’s had six different coordinators?” Sanders said on the Say What Needs To Be Said podcast, adding that claims of his son being unprofessional were false and told people saying it to “stop lying.”

“They want to create these narratives and create these stories and then attach them to a kid that ain’t never done nothing wrong… You gonna tell me he had on headphones, Shedeur? Anybody know my son understand he’s a professional. Like he’s gonna go into a meeting with headphones on?”

The irony of Sanders’ podcast appearance is that it’s part of the very thing that caused Shedeur to slide in the first place, and that’s the attention surrounding him — attention constantly fueled by his father Deion.

If Shedeur was an Andrew Luck-level prospect, then an NFL team would’ve absolutely taken him the the Top 5. But he isn’t, and because of that, the other 31 NFL teams decided that his talent level isn’t worth whatever media headache his presence or his father’s comments may cause.

Regardless of the reasons, Shedeur now finds himself in Cleveland with the Browns, which is far from a franchise that’s known for successfully developing young quarterbacks.
