There are currently eight head coaching vacancies in the NFL. Depending on how the Green Bay Packers feel about head coach Matt LaFleur after they squandered an 11-point lead in the game’s final seven minutes of their playoff loss, the NFL could soon have a ninth coaching vacancy.

Plus, LaFleur has just one year left on his contract in Green Bay. That likely means the two sides were always going to sit down and re-evaluate their relationship after the season ended.

Coach LaFleur had a chance to speak with Packers team president Ed Policy on the team plane last night, and he revealed that conversations about his coaching future are going to happen in the near future. That likely means he’ll either hash out a new contract or get fired in the next few days.

If the Packers do move on for LaFleur, they’d likely have something else lined up fairly quickly. After all, replacing a coach who ranks 16th on the NFL’s all-time coaching wins list won’t be easy.

Perhaps the Packers are even one of the teams that reached out about John Harbaugh’s interest in coaching Green Bay? He’s one of the few coaching candidates who can be counted on to compete for the playoffs on an annual basis.

Nevertheless, if LaFleur soon needs to find a new job, he’ll undoubtedly land on his feet as a head coach of another NFL team this offseason. Considering he just led the Packers to the playoffs and has only missed the postseason in one of his six seasons as an NFL head coach, he’d be an upgrade for most teams around the league.
