It’s very hard to argue the refs played a critical role in the outcome of Super Bowl LIX when you consider the Chiefs were simply outmatched by an Eagles team that cruised to a championship. However, that didn’t stop DeAndre Hopkins from airing some grievances after his squad got blown out.
There were plenty of storylines to keep an eye on heading into Super Bowl LIX, and anyone who’s been keeping tabs on the Chiefs this season is very aware plenty of fans managed to convince themselves Kansas City was a frequent beneficiary of questionable calls courtesy of referees with a tendency to throw a flag in their favor during some absolutely critical moments in the contests leading up to The Big Game.
Claims that the NFL has been “rigging” games for the Chiefs during their dynasty weren’t really backed up by actual data on the penalty front, but Roger Goodell nonetheless felt the need to go out of his way to deny those accusations prior to the Super Bowl showdown between Kansas City and Philadelphia (the NFL Referees Association also issued a statement taking aim at those “insulting and preposterous…conspiracy theories“).
It looked like we might have yet another Ref Show on our hands when A.J. Brown was hit with a weak offensive pass interference penalty that negated a 32-yard pass on the opening drive, which transpired before the Eagles benefitted from another suspect call that saw Trent McDuffie flagged for unnecessary roughness after making contact with Dallas Goedert while breaking up a pass.
However, the refs were largely a non-factor in a contest where the Chiefs were powerless to stop the Eagles from imposing their will, and I don’t see how anyone could seriously argue the officiating was a key factor in the outcome of a game where Philadelphia had a 34-0 lead toward the end of the third quarter and ultimately won by a score of 40-22.
Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins nonetheless decided to raise that particular issue after the game during the press conference where he alluded to some “touchy calls” he strangely implored the reporters in attendance to talk about in their coverage.

Of course, the refs certainly weren’t responsible for the wide-open pass Hopkins dropped on third down as the Chiefs were attempting to put some points on the board with possession in the final minute of the first half, and it’s hard to point to any calls that had a significant impact on a game the Kansas City ultimately lost because the Eagles had their number.
