Running through NFL rules that need to be changed for the 2025 season

Every professional sports league has times when the officiating is put to the test under a microscope. For the NFL, that seems to be every week when we don’t know what a catch is, ticky-tack touches lead to penalties but big hits of a similar variety do not and replay often leads to more confusion than clarity.

With the Kansas City Chiefs the talk of the sports world once again, with even casual fans believing that the NFL wants them to win, the Super Bowl will put an end to the 2024 season. Cleveland Browns QB Jameis Winston giving the Philadelphia Eagles a mock pregame speech is the closest DBN’s team has been to the big game in a long time.

Like the Browns, whose focus is on moving forward to the 2025 NFL season with NFL free agency and the NFL draft ahead, we wanted to look ahead to the rules and refs in 2025. Stealing from our friends at Pride of Detroit, we want to hear from you on what you would like to see changes with officiating next year.

POD’s Producer Jeremy Reisman suggested changing pass interference to just a 15-yard penalty, as it is in college. As he notes, committing PI to avoid a big catch is similar to an offensive lineman holding to prevent a sack. Reisman also noted getting rid of automatic first downs and having less grey area with delay of game/play clock.
