The writing was on the wall for a certain seasoned Patriot after the 2025 NFL Draft, and it became official Tuesday.

New England released Joe Cardona three days after the organization used a seventh-round pick on fellow long-snapper Julian Ashby. Cardona had been with the Patriots since they picked him in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, and his release fully cleared New England’s roster of all members of the franchise’s last Super Bowl-winning team in the 2018 season.

The transaction also signaled the loss of more veteran leadership at One Patriot Place. New England suffered the same fate when it cut ties with Ja’Whaun Bentley, Deatrich Wise, and David Andrews who, like Cardona, were on the Super Bowl LIII-winning team and previously served as captain in Foxboro, Mass. Andrews took to his Instagram story after Cardona was cut.

“One of the best I got to strap it up with,” Andrews wrote.

With Cardona now out of the picture, Kyle Dugger, Anfernee Jennings and Mike Owenu represent the longest-tenured players on the Patriots roster. All three were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.
