NFL Network’s lead draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah held a conference call yesterday and was asked a bunch of questions regarding the draft prospects. During the conference call, Jeremiah was asked about why he mocked Michigan tight end Colston Loveland to the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He explained that Loveland would be a fun ‘Joker/chess piece/mismatch player” in Sean Payton’s offense and that he would love to see them get a premium tight end like that.
The Broncos and Sean Payton are looking for a ‘Joker’ at the tight end position, and Loveland has the traits to be that guy. He is a big and athletic tight end who could step in and be a weapon for Bo Nix in the middle of the Broncos offense.
Jeremiah has Loveland graded as his TE2 behind Penn State’s Tyler Warren but he is ranked as his 7th overall player in the 2025 NFL Draft. He says Loveland is a “long, lean tight end with outstanding awareness, quickness, and big-play ability” and that he has the ability to be an impact player in his rookie season.

He has a tremendous feel for option routes and working in space. He can cleanly get in/out of breaks and he presents a big target to the quarterback. He attacks the ball in the air and is adept at finishing in crowds. After the catch, he has a smooth stride and possesses a nasty stiff-arm. He has some wiggle to make defenders miss, as well. His lack of bulk impacts his ability to stay connected as a run blocker, though. Overall, Loveland is equipped to make a lot of catches as a starting tight end in his rookie campaign.
Loveland has been a popular selection for the Broncos in mock drafts lately and the fit makes sense. Payton wants a Joker type at tight end and Loveland has the skill set to be that guy for him and has the ability to contribute right away.
There is a long way to go between now and the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft so things can and will change in the coming weeks and months. The Scouting Combine, Free Agency, Pro Days, and pre-draft workouts and visits change the landscape of the draft. So, we’ll see if Loveland continues to be a favorite for the Broncos at their 20th overall selection or if the narrative will begin to change.
