Dan Quinn speaks to the media before the second practice of training camp

Dan Quinn spoke to the media before the Washington Commanders hit the fields for the second practice of training camp. He talked about the emphasis on building up the line of scrimmage, saying if you’re strong there, you have a chance of being in every fight. Quinn was asked if this was to counter strengths in the NFC East, but said that was a byproduct of their overall strategy.

Quinn talked about adding future Hall of Famer Von Miller, and said the veteran pass rusher still has the qualities that made him great in his NFL career. You can’t teach the first step Miller possesses, and he still has the bend edge defenders need to beat tackles.

Andrew Wylie was playing right tackle with the ones, while first-round rookie Josh Conerly Jr was with the backups. Quinn said don’t read too much into that, and Conerly will run with the starters today. Washington will be putting players in multiple positions on the field and the depth chart during training camp as they look to find the best team for the season. Wylie was the starter at RT last season, but Conerly is expected to start this season with the veteran moving inside to guard, or to a reserve role.

Quinn made some headlines yesterday when he was asked about Sam Cosmi’s recovery from ACL surgery in January. He said that Week 1 was on the table which would be an amazing turnaround. He also said they would know more at the end of preseason, and he’s sticking with that for now. Quinn would like to avoid having to place Cosmi on injured reserve at the start of the season, which would allow him to be available during the first month of the season.
