The Washington Commanders are holding a light “jog thru” practice this afternoon. They held a full practice yesterday for Military Appreciation Day, but slowed it down for their second practice back in Ashburn, VA. The team is preparing to host the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football for their second preseason game. The long break between games gave Quinn the idea to hold a Burgundy vs Gold scrimmage game tomorrow. This will help help evaluate the players, and also the coaching staff as he continues developing a succession plan.
The team made 8 roster moves today, and Quinn said releasing players is one of the hardest parts of the job. Dominique Hampton was a 5th round pick last year, but looked overwhelmed during the first preseason game, and was released today. Quinn said it wasn’t working out, and they wanted to give him an opportunity to latch on to another team.
Laremy Tunsil left practice yesterday with a groin injury, but Quinn said he would be on the field for today’s jog-thru, and should be available for the scrimmage. Marcus Mariota has been dealing with a lower leg injury, and he’s working to the side, but he’s not there yet. Sam Hartman started the first preseason game with Josh Johnson finishing out the game. Jayden Daniels is expected to play a series or two, and will likely pass the torch to Johnson with Mariota sidelined.
