Dan Pitcher recently commented on the Cincinnati Bengals’ performance in their preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and he seems encouraged by the direction of the offensive line.

The offensive coordinator had praise for rookie guard Dylan Fairchild, saying, “Dylan played really well in the game. I was pleased. He played physical. He was aggressive.”

Pitcher brought up a twist pass on the left side that Fairchild pulled off with Orlando Brown. “He was assignment sound and technically sound,” the OC said, before adding, “but it’s a 15-play sample.”

In other words, let’s not get too excited. The rookie still has to put in the work to be consistent.

Meanwhile, Pitcher came to the defense of veteran Lucas Patrick, who struggled in the opener. “I thought he played well in the game,” he said. The OC mentioned “a couple of plays that he wants back” and “a third down he got beat.”

But Pitcher was positive overall, saying, “Lucas plays with great urgency. He plays with great technique. He plays with great awareness. He’s a leader. He’s a pro.”
