The Detroit Lions will be more gritty than usual during the 2026 season. Detroit is not happy after missing the playoffs last season, creating rumors that their Super Bowl window has closed. Should the Lions have made a huge trade this offseason to add a final piece to their defense?
Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave his honest reaction to the Myles Garrett trade during a recent press conference.
“Yeah I mean good for them. They’ve won it now, right?” Campbell joked with the media on Thursday, per Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. “Honestly, I had none. He’s a hell of a player, Verse is a hell of a player. They’re two totally different players. That was what they felt like they needed to do and good for them, man.”
The Rams and Browns shocked the entire NFL with the Garrett trade, in part because he wasn’t widely viewed as available.
Some Lions fans may be frustrated that their team was not the one to land Garrett. After all, Detroit seemed interested in Garrett after his trade request during the 2025 offseason. But this move may have been impossible for Detroit to pull off.
Remember, the Lions plan to play Jahmyr Gibbs in the near future as well as tight end Sam LaPorta. That, paired with other upcoming contracts, leaves Detroit in a delicate salary cap situation.
There’s also the fact that Jared Verse was an important piece of LA’s trade package. The trade probably would not have happened if the Rams were unwilling to deal Verse.
As a result, the Lions may have needed to send a player like Aidan Hutchinson or Jack Campbell in a hypothetical Garrett trade. Most fans would agree that it would have been too high of a price tag.
It will be exciting to see if Detroit can fight their way back to the postseason later this fall.
