After weeks of rumors, free agency chatter, and contingency signings, the Philadelphia Eagles were ultimately able to bring back Dallas Goedert on a one-year, $7 million contract for the 2026 season.
From the Eagles’ perspective, this deal made all the sense in the world, as he had an absolutely massive dead cap number that Roseman was able to spread out now that he has another year of team control, but why did Goedert pick to give Philadelphia such a gift? Was his market particularly light? Or did he simply believe in what Nick Sirianni has built and wanted another shot at a Super Bowl?
Well, on Tuesday, Goedert weighed in on just that, noting that he did have outside interest but was interested in finishing what he started in Philadelphia, instead of trying to match it elsewhere at this stage of his career.
“I was able to test for agency a little bit. Had opportunities to go elsewhere. Nothing was a better opportunity than I thought I could have here,” Goedert said via The Athletic’s Zach Berman. “Being able to play in the same place for nine years is special. It would have had to be something really drastic to have me try to sign somewhere else.”
With three additional tight ends signed in free agency, plus Eli Stowers selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft to be the team’s next great weapon at the position, 2026 might go down as Goedert’s farewell tour, even if he opts to keep playing like Zach Ertz before him. If that’s the same, it’s nice to know he got to make that choice instead of being forced to leave due to a lack of interest from the organization.
